The day started off leaving the house about 7:45 to set up the shuttle. We dropped off one vehicle at Iron Bridge on the Old Bainbridge road then drove to the Highway 12 Bridge with the boats. There was a woman just setting up for a day of fishing from the bank. The same woman that was there the last time we paddled. The temperature was a bit cool with a light steam rising off the water. The water level was at 27.7 feet. This was about four feet higher than last time.

We had planned on trimming a few branches that we had encountered on an earlier trip. With the water at this level those obstacles were now submerged. There were only three places that we had to duck under or wind our way through downed trees. Along the way we spotted some nice camping spots, some on sand bars and some high above the river with great views. Investigating the camp sites allowed us to stretch our legs and have a few snacks. There was very little wildlife on this trip, many birds and one alligator.

As the sun rose above the trees the wind picked up a bit but not enough to cause any difficulty. We took off our jackets and were never too hot or too cold. We didn?t see anyone else on the river until about ten miles down. The man seemed to be very involved in whatever he was making. He heard us as we approached his canoe. He came out of the willows on a sand bar to ask us about a pair of glasses he found at the put in. After a few minutes with him we paddled on.

The current was fairly strong but made for an easy paddle. We averaged over 4mph. It was a bit disheartening to see the take out so soon. It was a perfect 14 mile paddle. I think this was the perfect water level for this river. Next time the river is at this level, we should try to start further up in Georgia. We loaded the boats and enjoyed the last few minutes at the river and then went to pick up the other vehicle. Our fishing friend was still sitting by the river with a couple of poles hanging over the water. I guess no matter how you spend a day on the water, it's a good day!
