Liquid Silver
Who knows if it will ever happen again? We couldn't have planned a
better set of conditions for Oct. 31, 2001.
Five paddlers set out from Mashes Sands and headed into the setting
sun. Our destination...one of the coastal restaurants on Ochlockonee
Bay. The timing was perfect. The entire sunset unfolded before us,
from just above the horizon, to on the horizon, to sinking below. All
performed upon a glistening stage of calm outstretched water.
We pulled up to Angelo's shortly after dusk. We dined outside on the
deck...shrimp, scallops, grouper.
After a relaxing dinner we got back in our boats and headed into a
full moon. Our destination...the boat ramp at Mashes Sands.
Again...it couldn't have been planned better. The moon was positioned
above our take-out as if it were a guiding light. The air was clear.
The temperature perfect for paddling. The moon lit the water before
us. We paddled in an endless path of liquid silver. As we neared the
point, the water rose to a very slight chop and sparkled irridescent.
No one and no other place existed. The moon and the water were ours
alone.
