Between the north side of Indian Peninsula and the south side of Rt 30 (Rt 30 is off 98 west of Apalachicola)
Paddlers: John Lin and Bill Murdick We had planned to paddle to St Vincent Island with Karen Peterson and Awilda Font, but the high winds made that a bad idea. We told Karen to pursue alternate plans, and John and I went down to Indian Pass anyway to meet up with Awilda because we didn't have her cell phone number with us. Anyway, we two old retired guys just wanted a pleasant Sunday drive. We found Awilda. The wind was so strong that no one, not even motorboaters, were going out. Awilda, John, and I found a pocket high up on a sand dune, where we settled in out of the wind to eat our sandwiches. Indian Pass is a great beach area. Awilda went off to Apalachicola and John and I started to drive out of the Indian Pass peninsula, but on an impulse took one of the dirt roads to the right over to the lagoon, hoping the water might be calmer and we could get in a short paddle. It was, and we did. We found a little beach that offered access to a small faux-river section somewhat protected from the wind (see photo of John in sweater vest). We paddled up the riverette (see photo of John in yellow kayak) and then turned left out into the lagoon, where the wind was strong. After heading upwind for a while, we headed back on the lagoon side of the narrow swampy land mass that created the riverette. Then we went up and down the riverette, allowing the wind to push us back down each time. A pleasant local fellow arrived along the bank and began fishing for the large mullet that were jumping all over the place, while his family watched and cheered from their truck. In the first of two photos, he tosses out the net. Th! e next picture shows a boy holding up a mullet caught in that particular throw. He got 7 big ones while we were there (about 45 minutes). He would fish until he got enough for their family Sunday fish fry, he told me. We saw a Great Blue Heron upon arriving at the beach. Other birds we could identify that flew around us: American Bittern, Starling, Cormorant, Great (White) Egret (a family), swallows. --William Murdick Click on any image for a larger view.
