| Lake Seminole - Flint River Arm, Florida 10/27/02 |
|
Five paddlers gathered for an exploration of the area several miles up and downstream from Faceville Landing Park on Lake Seminole about 17 miles North of Quincy. We all found it very pretty. Wildlife was abundant. There were many birds including bald eagles and owls. Large amounts of floating vegetation offer habitat for a large population of Gallinules, Moorhens and Coots. I camped in the park which, like many Corps of Engineers' facilities, was very nice and well maintained with 5 or 6 nicely situated campsites offering natural beauty and privacy. Gallinules called to one another all night and a gentle rain pattered against my tent making sleep easy despite an ongoing disagreement between me and the dog about which of us would sleep on the air mattress. Although the vegetation and wildlife are attractive, the water is eutrophied and dirty looking. Big globs of algae occasionally come up on your paddle or trap the blade beneath the water. I suppose this is due to heavy agriculture along the banks of the Flint river in the area. I wonder if the Chatahoochee arm is similar. Boat traffic was moderate. A few very large, very fast boats whizzed by without slowing and there was one horrible airboat that nearly blew out our eardrums but for the most part there were only small fishing boats and it was quite peaceful. Everyone agreed that this would be worth a return visit.
Directions: Take US 90 to Quincy. In Quincy turn right onto SR 267 and follow it North about 8 miles to the Georgia border. At the border 267 becomes GA SR 302. Follow SR 302 to the intersection of SR 97. Turn left on 97 and go West about 1 1/2 miles to the intersection of Faceville Landing Road. Turn right and follow it about 3 miles to the end. DeLorme Atlas page 33 but Faceville Landing Road is not shown. GPS Coordinates: 30°47'18"N, 84°40'0"W -Michael Lampman |
