Mash Sands, Florida 10/21/01
If ever there was a perfect day in North Florida, this was it! We launched from the Mashes Sands Boat ramp and paddled about around the island and back, a total of about 8 miles in incredible sunny, cool weather. Dolphins joined us in the water while pelicans, terns and cormorants played in our airspace. Back in Levy Bay, a flock of Wood Storks passed overhead and settled in the nearby marsh.

We loafed on the beaches and drifted in the bay. We saw what appeared to be a long, deep beach moving as if it were a living thing. It turned out it was. It was the biggest mass of fiddler craps I have ever seen - at least a couple of million by my count.

This was the first serious paddle for Susan and I in the tandem. I have decided to keep it. This was the easiest open water paddling either of us have ever done. As you can see in the picture she had her back to me so she had no idea about my naps. As for the other picture, we could all see Buddy napping.

I never tire of this locaton with its many miles of lovely deserted beaches.
