Onno Carbon/Fiberglass Hybrid Paddles These blades are without question, the lightest per dollar of any on the market. I bought 2 piece ones but when they arrived, they could not be joined without sanding the shaft. The carbon blade looks as if it would be fragile but in real conditions is not as fragile as it looks although I still wouldn't use it to push off of any rocks. It is very stable showing no tendency to flutter under any test I could put to it. That combined with incredibly light weight should have a major impact on endurance for anyone paddling very long distances. I find the balance not to my liking. The fiberglass shaft is heavier than the carbon blade. I prefer to feel a little weight at the end of the swing. In other words, I like the weight of the paddle to be concentrated slightly toward the blade end like it is in a baseball bat or golf club. After trying them extensively, neither my wife nor I have adopted the Onno as a primary touring stick . We both still prefer our significantly heavier bent shaft Cadence Graphite paddles. Nevertheless Onno offers a 25 oz, flutter free high performance paddle for about the same price as many name brand 45 oz fiberglass ones. If I were buying a primary paddle on a tight budget, Onno would be my first choice. The 2 piece sells for $165. It comes in 220cm, 225cm or 230cm and there are three blade styles. Mine are the Mid-Tour shape. I'm sure there are many other sources but I got mine from Water Walkers, an outfitter in Maine, http://www.touringkayaks.com/onno_paddles.htm Michael Lampman lampman@newact.com |
