A blend of Tallahassee/ Middle Ga. paddlers met to paddle Talking Rock Creek, located south of Ellijay, the weekend of June 14-15th.The Tallahassee paddlers were Kerrie Barloga and Pat Spencer (see "moon over the rock" photo). They made it an overnight trip, splitting up the 15 miles into 2 days. A strong storm on Friday gave them plenty of water for the weekend and the weather stayed nice the rest of the time.
Talking Rock is a really pretty creek with high bluffs, tree canopies, mountain laurel, and a surprising number of Class II rapids A couple of Class III rapids riveted our attention in our borrowed aluminum Grumann canoe, but our group had no problem navigating these shoals in our loaded canoes.
And loaded they were. No skimping on this overnighter, with our lawn chairs, frosty beverages, and dining canopy. After making camp, we hiked the bluff overlooking our beautiful campsite. Happy hour came next with rum punches and mescadine wine. Then we feasted on roasted corn, batter dipped onion rings, marinated T bone steaks, baked beans and ice cream pie. Mmmm......
This is a highly recommended trip for paddlers comfortable navigating Class II-III (easy) rapids, and all are easily scouted/ portaged as the creek is narrow.
