| On Sunday December 16 seven of us launched from Luther Hall Landing and, under the expert guidance of Pat Spencer who knows the lake intimately, paddled SW about 4 or 5 miles rounding Goat Island, (no goats), and investigating a nice campsite thereon. On a peninsula on the East side of the lake we picniced on a very high bluff with a beautiful view of the lake. Pat shared his bar-b-qued yard squirrel and we identified this as a location to establish a permanent campsite. Waypoints for these locations are available.
I was formerly unaware of how much wilderness surrounds lake Talquin but there is certainly a great deal of it and wildlife abounds. Particularly neat were the many Bald Eagles, (too many to count) and large populations of Wood Ducks. There are beautiful public lands on many parts of the lake and clearly one could paddle and camp here for weeks and never see the same place twice. The 75 degree air and light overcast made for a nearly perfect day of paddling. Several of the paddlers on this trip were novices who amazed us by the apparent ease with which they completed a trip of nearly 10 miles, portions of it against winds, and chop.
